Hybrid Timber Frame Project at Logan Martin Lake

Wednesday, February 5th, 2025

At Texas Architectural Timbers, we take pride in supplying exceptional specialty building materials that bring architectural visions to life. One of our recent projects, a stunning hybrid timber frame home on a private island at Logan Martin Lake, Alabama, showcases the beauty, strength, and craftsmanship that timber framing can offer.

Project Overview

This remarkable home, designed by Phillip Black of B Group Architecture in Birmingham, is a hybrid timber frame structure that blends modern and traditional elements. Fabricated from kiln-dried Douglas Fir, the frame features full mortise and peg joinery, a technique that enhances both durability and aesthetics.

The result is a warm, inviting space with exposed timber elements that complement the home’s natural lakeside surroundings. The rich grain and warm tones of Douglas Fir add character and depth, while the structural integrity of the frame ensures lasting strength.

Why Hybrid Timber Frames?

Hybrid timber frame construction combines the elegance of traditional timber framing with conventional construction methods. This approach allows homeowners and architects to incorporate exposed beams and handcrafted joinery while maintaining flexibility in design and budget.

Key Features of This Project:

Kiln-Dried Douglas Fir – Known for its superior strength and stability
Full Mortise & Peg Joinery – A time-honored technique for enduring craftsmanship
Custom Architectural Detailing – Precision-fabricated to fit the architect’s vision
Naturally Beautiful – Enhancing the home’s connection to its natural surroundings

Reclaimed Timbers Project in Northern Texas

Tuesday, May 28th, 2024

We visited one of our ongoing projects last week and wanted to share some progress images of this impressive residence. Location is in Grayson County, Texas an hour North of Dallas. Scope of work required hundreds of Antique Hand Hewn Mixed Hardwood Timbers.

The majority of timbers were re-sawn at mill on one face to insure a uniform fit against ceilings. Timbers were cleaned to the original patina and fumigated prior to shipping to eliminate any insects, larvae or eggs.

The project also required thousands of square feet of 1″ nominal reclaimed “Brown Board” for use as ceiling paneling. Panel was produced in 5″/7″/9″ widths. Boards were back planed to insure a uniform thickness and square edged to allow for tight joints. This material was also fumigated.

This wonderful home was designed by John Lively & Associates of Plano, Texas. It has been our pleasure to work with the General Contractor: Tim Jackson Custom Homes located in Allen, Texas.

Please call/email Chuck or Daniel with any questions about this project or these materials (or any assistance with your Architectural Wood needs).
